Heat is harder on a battery than cold. It speeds up the chemical breakdown inside, so in our climate a battery often lasts closer to three years than the four or five you might expect elsewhere.
Slow or Labored Cranking
The engine turns over slowly, or sounds like it's straining, especially first thing in the morning. That's the classic early sign.
Electrical Gremlins
Dash lights flickering, the radio resetting, power windows moving slowly, or the dome light dimming when you crank. A weak battery can also trigger warning lights that clear once it's replaced.
It Needed a Jump
Once you've jump-started a car, treat the battery and charging system as suspect until they're tested. A one-time drain from leaving the lights on is different from a battery that can't hold a charge.
Age and Appearance
Three or more years old, a swollen case, corrosion built up on the terminals, or a rotten-egg smell all mean it's time for a test. Most shops can check state of health in a few minutes.
