Automotive air conditioning works by circulating refrigerant under pressure. When the air stops getting cold, it's almost always a refrigerant, electrical, or component problem — and running it that way can make things worse.
Low Refrigerant (the most common cause)
The system is sealed, so if it's low, there's a leak somewhere — a hose, a seal, the condenser, or the compressor. Adding more refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary fix at best.
A Failed Compressor or Clutch
If the compressor clutch isn't engaging, or the compressor has failed internally, the system can't build pressure. Sometimes you can hear it — a loud click, a rattle, or nothing at all when the AC switches on.
Electrical and Controls
A blown fuse, a bad relay, a failed pressure switch, or a blend-door actuator stuck on heat can all cause warm air from an otherwise healthy system.
Cooling System Overlap
On a hot day in traffic, an engine that's running hot will also make the AC struggle. If the temperature gauge is climbing, that comes first.
